The Atlantic Rain Forest region,
the Cerrado (Brazil's Central Scrubland) and
the Amazon Rain Forest
16-days intra-Brazil travel
June 7 - 22, 2010
The June Expedition will traverse the three most important ecosystems in Brazil. Participants will see Brazilian fauna in its natural environment, be introduced to two indigenous ethnic groups, and meet three different tribes whose livelihoods depend on the forest.
In the Atlantic Rain Forest region travelers will be introduced to the management of game animals (in the wild, in semi-captivity, and in captivity); the monitoring and reintroduction of threatened animal species (specifically the purple-breasted parrot); both the low- and high-altitude forests of the region; and traditional rural producers.
In the Cerrado (Brazil's central scrubland) participants will meet the FUNAI (Brazil's Bureau of Indian Affairs), visit the KrahĂ´, one of the indigenous tribes of the region, and take part in a KrahĂ´ hunting and foraging expedition.
In the Amazon Rain Forest the expedition will go through the principal rivers of the Amazon basin and its forests. Traveling by boat (the principal mode of transport in the region), participants will be introduced to the Mundurucu Indians, who live at the margins of the river (to an area extending to five thousand square miles), and will accompany them in a hunting and fishing expedition.
